For Evacuees: Hurricane Katrina Relief

If you have evacuated your home due to Hurricane Katrina and you need assistance, please contact the nearest Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) county office. They will be able to assist you in applying for Federal assistance, locating a healthcare provider, obtaining prescription refills, finding housing and housing vouchers, replacing your personal identification documents, locating employment or unemployment payments, acquiring food stamps, registering for school, and finding a quality daycare provider. Your local DFCS office can be found at http://dfcs.dhr.georgia.gov or calling 404-651-8409.

Federal Assistance
There are two primary types of disaster assistance made available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency - Housing Assistance and Other Needs Assistance. The total assistance an individual can receive from FEMA from any combination of these programs is $25,600 for any disaster. Registration for FEMA assistance can be completed at http://fema.gov/register or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA.

Housing Needs
The Georgia Department of Community Affairs has utilized two databases to help match evacuees with temporary and permanent housing. DFACS employees as well as shelter caseworkers can assist you in searching through these two websites: http://georgiahousingsearch.org http://www.hurricanekatrinahousing.org

Employment Search
Individuals unemployed as a result of a major disaster, and not covered by regular state or private unemployment insurance programs, may still be eligible for unemployment benefits. The Georgia Department of Labor has coordinated with Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi to ensure that all eligible people will be able to collect their unemployment checks. Alabama natives should call 866-234-5382 for assistance while citizens of Louisiana should call 225-342-2840 or visit www.laworks.net Mississippi residents should call 601-321-6420 for assistance. Georgia’s Department of Labor has also developed a searchable database to assist people in locating new place if employment. The database can be found at http://www.dol.state.ga.us/js/find_a_job.htm

Personal Identification Replacement
The Georgia Department of Driver Services is assisting individuals in obtaining new copies of their state’s Driver’s license or photo identification. If you need a reprint of your Alabama or Mississippi ID, please contact your nearest DFCS office for assistance. If you need a reprint of your Louisiana ID, please visit your local DFACS office or http://www.dds.ga.gov and fill out the application. Fax the completed form to 225-925-3901.

Education and Child Care
The Georgia Department of Education, the Department of Early Care and Learning, the Board of Regents, the Department of Technical and Adult Education, the Student Finance Commission and the Office of Student Achievement have placed all available information on www.gadoe.org Enrollment information can be found at your local DFACS office or by calling the local school system.

Any college student displaced from Hurricane Katrina wishing to continue their education may attend Georgia State University for a maximum of $100.00. This price includes all mandatory fees, late fees and Tuition!
